Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do. If you visit a Chinese family you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you'll not move before the host says "Come in, please." After you enter the room, you wouldn't sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea-table before you or sent to your hand, you'll say "Thank you" and receive it with your two hands, not one hand, or they'll think you are ill-mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is odd manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a guest never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host, especially the hostess pleasant.
1. We must find out what the different manners are in different countries so that ___________. A. we won't be thought in poor health B. they won't think we are ill C. we can know what to do and what not to do when we go there D. we can give some examples
2. In China, when the host opens the door, _________ before he says "Come in, please!" A. you won't leave B. you won't walk C. you won't stand in front of him D. you won't get in
3. In Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes ________. A. before your visitor enters your house B. before you enter the host's house C. before you visit a family D. before you sit down and receive a cup of tea
4. In European countries, _________ when you get into a house. A. you needn't take off your shoes B. you must take off your dirty shoes C. you are not allowed to wear dirty shoes D. you should put on clean shoes
5. In a Malay house, a guest leaves a little food _________. A. to show that he has enjoyed it B. to show that he can't have any more C. to show that he is not hungry at all D. to show that he needs some drink

What is SOA governance?
SOA governance is an extension of IT governance that focuses on the lifecycle of services and composite applications in an organization’s service-oriented architecture (SOA). The function of SOA governance is to define:
Decision rights for the development, deployment and management of new services.
Monitoring and reporting processes for capturing and communicating governance results. Because SOA applications are intrinsically fragmented, they introduce new governance challenges. But with the proper policies, principles, standards, procedures and processes in place, businesses can realize the full benefit of service orientation. An effective SOA governance platform not only helps business and IT teams better identify which projects contribute most to business goals, but it also empowers employees to work and collaborate more efficiently by clearly defining their roles and responsibilities.
What is service lifecycle management?
Once the SOA governance framework is implemented, it will be used in the model, assemble, deploy and manage phases within the SOA lifecycle. Related to the operational aspects of implementing SOA governance, service lifecycle management addresses how services will be developed, deployed and managed.
Service lifecycle management focuses on the development and deployment of services. SOA governance supplies the decision rights, processes and policies for those activities. Once a service is deployed, there must be management aspects in place to control and monitor the service.
Within service lifecycle management there is a set of functions that will need to be in place and governed to ensure that the value proposition of SOA, particularly reuse and cost reduction, is achieved.
March, 2006 - IBM announced our SOA Governance strategy and direction and tooling
October 2006 - Service Lifecycle Management was added to detail how SOA Governance will be operationalized within the SOA Lifecycle.
December 2006 - IBM featured Empowering the ‘A’ in SOA, which included a number of new and updated products targeted at approach to Service Lifecycle Management Architecture component.
Today - IBM is adding SOA Quality Management to our SOA Governance and Service Lifecycle Management
The announcement today focuses on extending the overall SOA Governance and Service Lifecycle Management capabilities with a set of new Rational test tools and updates to Tivoli products and GTS (Global Technology Services) Offerings.
The increased flexibility and cross-organizational nature of business services that SOA facilitates, requires that organizations establish a framework to implement active decision-making, accurate tracking, improved serviceability and better communication.
SOA governance is the mechanism to ensure that the decision making structure is solid, relationships between services and parties are managed and that there is compliance with the laws, policies, standards and procedures under which an organization operates.
Specifically SOA governance
Creates higher return from focused SOA investments
Aligns IT and business strategies, creates communication paths
Reduces coordination costs: less time wasted due to poorly-managed conflicts
Institutes efficient and effective decision making and clarity executing roles and accountability
Measures effectiveness of SOA
An enterprise that fails to realize the importance of an effective governance structure may not stand to benefit much from a SOA transition.

In falling film evaporators, liquid and vapors flow downwards in parallel flow. The liquid to be concentrated is preheated to boiling temperature. An even thin film enters the heating tubes via a distribution device in the head of the evaporator, flows downward at boiling temperature, and is partially evaporated. This gravity-induced downward movement is increasingly augmented by the co-current vapor flow.
Falling film evaporators can be operated with very low temperature differences between the heating media and the boiling liquid, and they also have very short product contact times, typically just a few seconds per pass. These characteristics make the falling film evaporator particularly suitable for heat-sensitive products, and it is today the most frequently used type of evaporator.Because of the low liquid holding volume in this type of unit, the falling film evaporator can be started up quickly and changed to cleaning mode or another product easily.
Falling film evaporators are highly responsive to alterations of parameters such as energy supply, vacuum, feed rate, concentrations, etc. When equipped with a well designed automatic control system they can produce a very consistent concentrated product.
The fact that falling film evaporators can be operated with small temperature differences makes it possible to use them in multiple effect configurations or with mechanical vapor compression systems in modern plants with very low energy consumption. In evaporators with Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR), the heating medium in the first effect is vapor developed in the same effect, compressed to a higher temperature by means of a high-pressure fan (MVR). Any excess vapor from the high heat section is condensed or may be utilized in a high concentrator.
IPPE has Available two Unitech Titanium falling film evaporators manufactured in 1993, These Evaporators include an Incoloy 825 vapor body which makes up an 15,862 Sq Ft heat transfer section made of 872 Grade 2 Titanium ( 2"OD tubes x 36' long ) and MVR compressor driven by a 500HP motor. The train’s design capacity is 92GPM ( distillate flow 83.95 GPM ). This converts to 44,457 lbs/hr water evaporation. International Process Plants and Equipment supplies evaporators, distillation plants, crystallizers and other thermal concentration / separation systems to the food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical (organic and inorganic), carbohydrate and food ingredients industries.

The science of physics
The science of physics today is as current as the morning newspaper. Indeed, as a result of new advances in physics and their rapid application to inventions designed to satisfy man's wants. The world itself has been changing rapidly. Space technology, industrial technology, and the technology of the home, the farm, the office, the bank, and the department store have all been revolutionized. Clearly, every grown-up today would understand the world he lives in much better if he knew something about physics. Whether it be Congress (美国国会) voting huge sums of money for new warships, space exploration, or atomic energy;the office staff learning to use a new computer;son Bobby wanting to know about going to the moon;or the housewife learning to operate a new electric stove, physics seems to be everywhere. Teachers in thousands of schoolrooms in America are trying to communicate some of the excitement and importance of these new developments to their students. They know that some of their eager students will someday be scientists and will themselves then contribute (贡献) to the development of new knowledge or its application to new things. But in any case, they can be sure that if they bring a knowledge of science (any science) to their students in meaningful and stimulating ways, they have contributed much to helping each one live a more meaningful life.

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket
A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket (彩票) at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the $25,000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash, The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatocei was changing a tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped "to help", stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy. Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire (里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying: "I'm trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million lire for him-a lottery win. Please meet me, Anonymity (匿名) guaranteed." Professor Sabbatucei received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized -and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The robber, a 35-year-old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. How Americans Began to Eat Tomatoes
People have strange ideas about food. For example, tomato is a kind of very delicious vegetable. It is one of useful plants that can be prepared in many ways. It has rich nutrition and vitamin. But in the 18th century, Americans never ate tomatoes. They grew them in their gardens because tomato plants are so pretty. But they thought the vegetable was poisonous. They called tomatoes "poison apples." President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat. He was a learned man. He had been to Paris, where he learned to love the taste of tomatoes. He grew many kinds of tomatoes in his garden. The President taught his cook a way for a cream of tomato soup. People today expect
People today expect to be examined when they enter a doctor's office. At least they expect their blood pressure and temperature to be measured. However, as recently as two hundred years ago, a doctor's treatment depended on talking with the patient. In general, the communication between doctors and their patients was the most important part of medical methods. The modern age of medicine began with the stethoscope, an instrument(仪器) for listening to patients' heartbeat and breathing. Before that, a doctor did not touch a patient. In fact, there was no such thing as medical examination. All treatment was the result of the patient's telling the doctor what the problem was and the doctor's being able to understand it. The stethoscope - and all the other medical instruments - had a serious effect on the practice of medicine. Doctors became better at finding the medicine. Doctors became better at finding the medical problems. More lives were saved. At the same time, doctors gave less importance to the communication between patients and doctors. Some doctors actually stopped talking to their patients. It is easy to understand why some sick people thought of themselves as broken machines.

In the nanoliter range
In the nanoliter range, the use of syringe, peristaltic or piston pumps, leads to hysteresis, long equilibration times, irreproducibility and pulsing. Existing fluid handling devices are thus often inadequately adapted to the manipulation of small fluid volumes.
Pressure or volume flow control?Syringe or peristaltic pumps may seem suitable for applications requiring knowledge of the transported fluid volumes. However, due to hysteresis and connections compliance, actual instantaneous flows in microchannels often have little to do with the pump's setting. In many cases, calculating flows in a Microfluidic network under high resolution pressure control is easier and more accurate than using volume-based pumps.
To address this problem, FLUIGENT developed the MFCS microfluidics flow control systems, based on the proprietary FASTAB™ technology.
The MFCS resulting from Fastab technology is not a simple pressure controller. It is an easy and fast means to handle fluids, whilst still allowing the measurement of the flow with a flow meter.
From nl/mn to several µl/mn, the repeatability and the fast response time of the MFCS are inherent aspects of Fastab technology. A pressure dividing bridge now allows dynamic pressure management in real time. For the first time, the equivalent of a Wheatstone bridge is applied to the microfluidics reality. With 4 or 8 independent channels and a 40 ms response time, MFCS allows the design, optimization and full automation in a few clicks, of virtually any spatial and temporal flow circulation patterns in complex microchannels architectures.

for Professionals and Consultants
Professionals and consultants working within the enterprise or across a client base deal with a great deal of knowledge. They use their skills and expertise to apply this knowledge to particular situations, thereby improving quality, productivity, efficiency and resource utilisation - ultimately adding value for stakeholders of the enterprise.
This group has traditionally been inadequately supported by software tools. Office products produce individual documents, spreadsheets, presentations and the like, but do not relate these to overall projects or provide an easy way to manage templates and versions of documents derived from them. Modeling tools are often too heavyweight and too specialised, forcing unsuitable approaches and notations to be followed. Many tools are single user - limiting their usefulness in a team. Few are properly web enabled, allowing the entry, query and management of information via the intranet or Internet - this limits their usefulness across an enterprise or within a consulting organization with distributed teams. Some high end tools do address areas like enterprise architecture, but are prohibitively expensive.
Inspired, as a long time knowledge-based consultancy group working in the areas of strategy, architectures, program management and methods, has developed a tool specifically to support the kinds of activities undertaken by planners, architects, business engineers, project managers, methods implementors and other knowledge intensive professional roles.
What is Archi?
Archi is a solution comprising a knowledge repository, a web based software tool and sets of meta data which customise the tool for particular purposes, such as enterprise architecture management, program management or methods definition and management. It supports multiple concurrent users and is implemented as a server product behind a standard web server (e.g. IIS™, Apache™, Websphere™) while storing repository information in a standard relational database management system (e.g. SQL Server™, Oracle™, DB2™). It can run in either a Windows NT/2000/2003/XP ™ environment or on a Unix™ platform (special request).
Users access Archi through standard web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer™, Netscape™). Archi uses only standard protocols supported on current popular browsers and does not require any plug-ins or Java. All that is required is HTML and a basic subset of Java Script.
Archi is very flexible and can be easily extended by a user to support additional types and relationships, in a matter of minutes, interactively at run time and without affecting other users' access to the system.
While Archi manages rich structured data and relationships internally within the repository, it can also reference and manage a wide variety of knowledge assets created in other tools, including: word processing documents, spreadsheets, models, project plans, presentations and even audio and video.

Car and Polluted Air
Each year there is an increasing number of cars on the roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out every six Americans works at putting together the parts of the cars, driving trucks, building roads, or filling with gas. Americans won't live without cars ! Most Americans would find it hard to think what life could look like without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of the air pollution caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health. One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That's what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean air is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow. Another way is to take the place of car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man. To prevent the world from being polluted by car, we'll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and to go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean. But this change does not come easily--a large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment. Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

flowing plants and non-flowering plants
Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore(因此), animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us. If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected (保护) by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (孢子). Spores are very, very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float (漂浮) in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.

Matt grows the nicest
Matt grows the nicest vegetables in the village. He grows fruit too--big , sweet apples and oranges. And what else ? Well , the biggest and the prettiest flowers. Things grow in Matt's garden all through the year. He cuts some flowers for his sitting room table; and, of course, he eats some fruit and vegetables. But he sells everything else in the market. Matt is not a poor man --oh, he isn't poor. He knows a few other gardeners; but he doesn't have any friends. You might ask, "Why is that ? Why doesn't he have friends ?" I will tell you. People do not understand him and they do not understand his garden. "Why not?" you will ask. " It's a very good garden, isn't it ?" It is a wonderful garden. Matt plants things in spring, summer, autumn and winter. After that he does very little work. He sits in the garden with his small radio. And everything grows. People ask, "How does Matt grow these wonderful things? He waters the plants sometimes, but he doesn't do anything else. He just sits under an orange tree with his radio. He listens to music nearly all day!" And that is all quite true. People can not understand it, and so they don't like it very much. Matt likes music. But what about the garden ? Who does the work? I will tell you another true thing: the music. All plants love music; and Matt knows that. Do you want big vegetables and the loveliest flowers ? Well, just give your plants a lot of music.

4. If you want big vegetables and more lovely flowers, the best way is _________. A. to keep the garden clean B. to water them very often C. to play music to them D. to sit under a tree with a nice radio
5. According to the passage, music ________. A. plays quite an important part in the life of plants B. has nothing to do with the growing of plants C. does all the work in the garden D. does more than a gardener does

Like most English children
Like most English children, I learned foreign languages at school. When I made my first visit to the United States. I was sure I could have a nice easy holiday without any language problem. But how wrong I was. At the American airport, I was looking for a public telephone to tell my friend Danny that I had arrived. A worker asked if he could help me. "Yes," I said, "I want to give my friend a ring." "Well, that's nice. Are you getting married?" he asked. "No, " I replied. "I just want to tell her on the phone I have arrived." "Oh," he said, "There is a phone downstairs on the first floor." "But we're on the first floor now," I said. "Well, I don't know what you are talking about. Maybe you aren't feeling too well after your journey. " he said. "You just go and wash up, and you will feel a lot better." And he went off, leaving me wondering where on earth I was: at home we wash up after a meal to get the cups and plates clean. How can I wash up at an airport ? At last we did meet. She explained the misunderstanding: Americans say "to give someone a call, " but we English say "to give somebody a ring". When we say "to wash your hands ", they say "to wash up ". And Englishman start numbering from the ground floor so the first floor is the second for Americans

The Program in Computing and Education has been offering an M.A. degree since 1974. In 1983 we began offering an Intensive version of this degree program in which students come to Teachers College only in the summer (in July) and complete the degree requirements through independent study and online courses from where they live. Each summer we have accepted approximately 20 new students for whom it is impossible or inconvenient to come here easily during the Fall and Spring terms. To date, over 500 students have completed the Intensive Program.
This is a program for teachers or others who work with schools, such as technology coordinators, and curriculum specialists.
